Diego's CT reading is back, and it is unfortunately not what we hoped for.
There are two small masses in the place where his kidney used to be. It does not look great, but according to his doctor this typically isn't the way a relapse would occur. They will need to do a biopsy quickly, and will probably remove the masses at the same time. Yes, that is a 5th surgery within the year. Diego's doctor did not want to discuss prognosis until we knew what we were dealing with. She said she is hopeful that it has something to do with his bowel obstructions and is not cancer. The surgery will probably done at UCSF within the week.
We are in shock. I can't say I was not at all concerned beforehand, but with Diego was doing so great, it does come as a surprise. He was singing at the top of his lungs on the car ride over this morning, and he and Mateo were just bouncing off the walls in the doctor's waiting area today. He is eating better, and we just got his NG tube taken out yesterday. Sometimes this feels like someone else's storyline.
